Born and raised on a farm in rural Iowa, Chad is currently a second-year law student (2L) at Saint Louis University School of Law in Saint Louis, Missouri. He graduated with a B.A. from Grinnell College in May 2005, double majoring in History and Political Science. While at Grinnell, he was involved in many campus groups, including Students for International Democracy, Model United Nations, Campus Democrats, as well was being a Charter Member of Democrats for Life of Iowa. During the summer of 2003, he interned for The Honorable Donna M. Christian-Christensen, a member of the United States House of Representatives representing the U.S. Virgin Islands. Chad has interned as a campaign staffer on a congressional campaign and also has studied and worked in the Metropolitan Tribunal of the Archdiocese of Dubuque, Iowa and most recently in the Metropolitan Tribunal of the Archdiocese of Saint Louis. Chad’s numerous academic interests include Tort Law, International Law, African and Latin American politics, American history (with a specific focus on the life and work of Charles Sumner and of the Reconstruction era), Roman Catholic Canon Law, and the relationship between the Roman Catholic Church and civil society. He is currently President of the Saint Thomas More Society (Catholic law student group). One of his recent papers, “Archbishop Oscar Romero in the U.S. Media, 1977-1980: Elevation Before Martyrdom,” a short analysis of newspaper articles on the El Salvadoran prelate, is a forthcoming publication to be presented in Khthonios: A Journal for the Study of Religion. He is also working on revising an article, “The Storm Beats: Charles Sumner and the Liberal Republicans of 1872.” Marzen hopes to eventually practice law in Iowa, and possibly pursue a career in public service
